New Year, New Goals

Happy New Year! Wow, 2014 is here already. Where did 2013 go?

I used to hate New Years, because January is always a bit of a depressing month having to get back into a regular work routine. But ever since I started writing and publishing books, I now look forward to starting a new year. Instead of resolutions, this is the time of year to set new goals.

2013 was a pretty good year. This is a rundown of what happened to me.

I published BECOMING HUMAN (Book 1) in December 2012

So much of 2013 was spent watching my sales figures for this book. Things started out slowly for me, mostly because I was working it out as I went along.  From Dec – April, sales were barely trickling in. Then May came about and I applied for a BookBub paid promotion. I finally had enough reviews (15 US Amazon reviews of 4.0 or higher) for them to consider my book. When they ran my promotion, my sales rocketed. Thanks BookBub, for putting me on the map.

I secured an Audio Book Publishing Deal

Yes, Podium Publishing liked BECOMING HUMAN and, without having read the other two books, they expressed an interest to be part of the trilogy’s increasing reader base. I have no date yet, but I expect Book 1 will be transformed into an audio book in 2014. I will be updating my newsletter subscribers first, of course! I published ALTERED REALITY (Book 2) in December 2013

A year was a long wait for some, including me, but I needed the extra time to make sure I had the book right. With two books under my belt, I’m a little more confident about the publishing process.  At a time when I should have been relaxing, I spent the latter part of December staring at my computer and checking for reviews. I don’t want to go through that again, which is why Book 3 will be published sooner–I hope!

I did my first talk ever at University College Dublin

This was a first for me and I was excited to be asked.  Even though I was only speaking to a small group of seven writers that were part of the English Literary Society, it was interesting to share my experiences with them and to hear a little about their own. Some had received negative comments about their writing and had stopped altogether. Others had interesting ideas for books they were about to write or were writing. My advice to them was to keep going.

So that’s not too bad, considering it was my first year in the public eye. So what are my goals for 2014?

Find more time to write!

I want to free up more time to write, and that means getting creative. Since I’m already working every evening and at weekends to catch up on things my writer-self had promised to do, I need to work smarter. I would also like to have more time to read/learn more about what’s happening in the world of publishing, to plan more promotions and to spend more time engaging with readers.

Audio Book

I’ve already spoken about this, but 2014 should be the year for the audio book version of BECOMING HUMAN. More importantly, it will mean new eyes on my work and that is more valuable to me in the long term.

I will be publishing Book 3 in the Exilon 5 Trilogy

My aim is to release the third book earlier than December (Woohoo!). Nothing is set in stone and my newsletter subscribers will get the skinny on that first.

Increase Sales

Sales for Book 1 started out of the gate slowly, so I’m hoping with some experience under my belt, I can get moving a little faster this year. My goal is to triple 2013 sales numbers.

My sales numbers were good by the end of 2013, but where did I sell the most?

 1: Amazon 65%

I sold most through this avenue. I was exclusively selling with them from December to March 2013, so other sales websites didn’t really get a look in.

2: Kobo 18.77%

I had a really nice boost in sales in December thanks to a promotion I was asked to participate in. The result of that promotion is still sending sales my way.

3: Barnes and Noble 14%

B and N was a surprise hit for me in 2013 largely due to BookBub promotions, but the after sales at the full price have continued and are ticking over for Book 2.

4: Apple 1.8%

I ran two BookBub promotions in 2013, but only one of those promotions included Apple. Sales are okay there, but at least there were sales.s

5: Smashwords 0.43%

6: Sony 0%

Zero sales. More about this particular channel in another post.

New Projects

I have an idea for another book and I hope to write a novella to keep readers ticking over while they wait for the full length novel to be completed. Stay tuned. As always, newsletter subscribers will be the first to hear about any new creative stirrings!

So, what are some of your goals for 2014?
